Flood Fury in Wa: Airstrip Residents Clash with Fuel Station Over Recurring Disaster

Tensions are rising in the Airstrip Residential Area in Wa, as frustrated residents square off with operators of a nearby filling station they accuse of causing persistent and destructive flooding in the community. The latest downpour turned devastating, with floodwaters surging into homes, displacing families, and forcing many to flee to safer grounds. For residents, the situation is no longer an isolated incident but a recurring crisis that strikes with every heavy rain. According to locals, the construction of the filling station has interfered with the area’s natural drainage system. Water that once flowed through established paths is now allegedly redirected into residential spaces, leaving homes and properties vulnerable. Alhassan Nuhu, one of the affected residents, described the chaos as it unfolded. He said the flooding escalated within minutes of the rainfall. By the time he returned home after being alerted by his wife, water had already taken over their living spaces, leaving them with no option but to evacuate. Residents insist they have repeatedly raised concerns with authorities, submitting petitions and engaging officials, yet little has been done to address the issue. Many say the flooding began only after the filling station was built, turning what was once a manageable environment into a danger zone. The impact has also been severe on local businesses. Liticia Bazaawaale, a bar owner in the area, recounted heavy losses after floodwaters swept through her establishment, damaging refrigerators, destroying stock, and disrupting operations. She added that the aftermath has left the area hazardous, with slippery conditions posing risks to both workers and customers. Now, patience is wearing thin. Residents are threatening to escalate the matter, warning they could involve the police and push for the closure of the filling station if urgent action is not taken. Responding to the concerns, Upper West Regional Director of NADMO, Osman Sinsew, acknowledged the complaints and confirmed that authorities are assessing the situation. He noted that while filling stations are typically approved through regulatory processes, any decision regarding relocation would depend on technical evaluations. He also pointed out that the flooding may not be caused by a single factor, citing poor drainage planning and the possibility that the area itself is prone to waterlogging. For residents, however, the message is clear: until a lasting solution is found, the rains will continue to bring fear, loss, and growing anger.
